The Wolf Moon and Moon Calender 2026

THE WOLF MOON IN JANUARY

There are nights in January that feel like a quiet doorway into another world: the air is clear, everything seems a little closer – and somewhere in the background lingers that ancient sense of winter, instinct, and nature magic. That is exactly how I experience the Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the year. This year, it appears on January 3rd.

The name comes from a time when people, during the darkest winter nights, often heard wolves howling in the distance – and that still feels deeply fitting today. Here where I live in Brandenburg, this is not just a myth but something you can truly experience. Especially in late winter, when the mating season begins, wolves become more present acoustically. And every time I hear them, I get goosebumps and that powerful feeling of ancient, wild nature that inspires me so deeply.

(By the way: you can also find my Wolf Moon watercolor illustration shown above as a postcard and as a fine art print.)

JOURNALING WITH THE WOLF MOON

For me, the Wolf Moon is not a “perfect New Year’s resolution moon,” but rather an honest beginning: quiet, raw, intuitive. It invites us to start the new year without pressure, but with clarity.

A small Wolf Moon journaling ritual (simple and gentle):

  • One sentence to carry you through January: “I begin at my own pace.”
  • Three things you want to protect (your energy, your time, your creativity …)
  • One brave wish that still feels tender – but true

If you like, turn this into a double-page spread and give it a visual home. That is exactly why I created my “Lunar Wolf” journal: as a companion for this very mood – winter, moonlight, forest magic. The matching Lunar Wolf stickers fit perfectly, because they help you create something beautiful quickly, without needing much time (or lettering skills – I feel that very much).

MOON CALENDAR 2026

If you use the moon as a kind of natural calendar, 2026 is a truly exciting year:

In 2026, there are 13 full moons – which means that May has two full moons (on May 1st and May 31st). For many, this is a beautiful symbol: a month with “extra moon,” in the best possible way. Perfect for dedicating a special focus month in your journal (for example: growth, visibility, blooming).

A year with eclipses:

  • Total lunar eclipse on the night of March 2nd–3rd, 2026 (unfortunately only visible outside Europe).
  • Partial lunar eclipse 27.–28. August 2026
  • Total solar eclipse on August 12th, 2026: In Europe, the path of totality runs across Iceland and Spain; in Germany it will be visible as a deep partial solar eclipse (for Berlin, for example, a high coverage is expected).

So you don’t have to search for all these moon moments (full moons, new moons, and half moons) yourself, I created a Moon Calendar 2026 in DIN A5 format, designed to match the Lunar Wolf journal. It’s perfect for printing out and pasting directly into your journal.

(Tip: I like to print it on slightly heavier paper and paste it into the front of my journal like a small “yearly oracle.”)
